You will never meet a Korean guy like this!
Firstly, they have limited English which reduces the pool size for a start!

Secondly, they very much are a 'Keeping up appearances', type society.

All men claim to be macho and none ever admit to being gay!
The strange thing is that you stand a better chance of meeting someone if you are just sightseeing.

However, they will talk to you on any other subject and never mention gayness.
You can go through a whole day and evening talking semi-nonsense, but it's really a game of positioning so that the Korean will not lose face and always have a way out!

Eventually, and under the influence of booze he will make a move but blame it on being drunk.

Mostly, they still feel that they've not let the old male macho side down if they are 'Top'!

As for a Korean Bottom, well, there again, it's like an out of body experience for them.

It's something like doing it with a blow-up doll.

There's you and him, but he's really somewhere else and never ever talks about it. When you finally leave each other, it's as if you've just had a business meeting!

Stroll around downtown and someone will approach you, but it's random and pot luck.

They are gay apolgists and when the encounter is over, they can't wait to get out of your way.

Oh yes, a word of warning.

Coupled to this sense of not losing face is one of 'payback'.
When all the excitement and hormones have settled down, along with the blood pressure and you may have fallen asleep....beware, it's danger time!
He will feel embarassed and a need to have something of yours to teach you a lesson because after all you have 'used him'!
Your money, wallet, plastic cards or all will go with him early in the morning.

Don't count on your cards not being used because of your foreign name & signature.
It will be used at a big store because ALL koreans are Brothers and Sisters and they will pass goods to their Brother even with a western name on the credit card!

I would have to agree with Koanchi,but even more confusing than the gay Korean men, would be the straight Korean men. Mainly due to the affection they don't mind displaying publicly. This can also result in being in a club and watching two men grind, hug and overtly feel each other up, then go over to their girlfriends and do the same with them.

There are those stories of Korean men believing that showing affection to other men as not being a problem. Straight women dance with each other all the time, why is it so different for straight men?

They're well groomed, well dressed and very very pretty, which makes it all the more frustrating to know they'll beat you up if they think you're trying to solicit them for sex...

Though I don't think that ALL gay Korean men fit into the category that Koanchi mentioned, I think that does represent a population who, due to their culture, follow these beliefs.

I think koanchi must have just had a very bad experience.. one that could have happened in any culture.. i dont think it sounds exclusive to koreans.. in fact i have lived in korea almost 3 years and while i have seen first hand the concept of keeping up appearances, everything else sounds a bit like sour grapes... i think generally koreans are sweet and genrous and sexy men that are very responsive as bottoms and enthusiatic as tops... i think as far as the asian community goes theya re the best.....

I agree with patrik, Koanchi had bad experience and this could happend every where in the world not only in Korea.Be carreful who you hook up and take home.
i live several years in Korea got many Korean gay friends , because of the culture Asians dont come out like in western countries so you have to accept it.
If you travel around the world be open minded accept other cultures and they will accept you.
If not stay home in your country .

While the Macho guys may be the rule my experience is different. I met a Koreon guy in our office that was married, very cute and knew little about gay life. We never talked about gay as such but we had lots of fun at lunch time at my apartment with mutual jack-offs. I think he liked the feel of my dick because it was bigger. We did a few other things but I think he was basically straight.

Yes, I think this assessment of Korean men is an over generalization. There are plenty of known (if not openly publicized) gay venues where one can meet Korean men.

In any country, when you bring someone you have just met back to your place or if you choose to spend the night together, you have to take sensible precautions to secure your personals and valuable. Unfortunately that is a reality everywhere.

Not my experience of Korean guys. Have slept with a couple and never found this. I even offered to pay for a taxi home but they declined. Beautiful and curteous.

Here in Vancouver Canada where there are a TON of Koreans -about 50-100 thousand recently migrated here and a few thousand more on student visas- most gay Koreans are pretty out and as varied as gay men of any recently immigrated culture here where the community is smaller than back home and "everyone knows someone". [this impression often negates the freedom one can feel by being away from the home country].

It is a more conservative society about gayness than Japanese by far though.

While I appreciate the comments made earlier by Koanchi, I just don't feel they adequately represent my own experience of many years here in Korea (I should say, there in Korea, because I'm writing from California at the moment). Yes, what he writes can be taken, at face value, as accurate - I suspect it represents more a limited experience of the wider Korean culture. I'll have to think about this a bit more - I just feel that some essential part of dealing with a Confucian culture is missing here.

O what have Korean men come to be! I am in utter shock and disgust to hear what my fellow Koreans have done to you and those who share similar stories with you. My apologies, if this could ever assure you that there are still Korean men who have some decency and dignity left, and I should hope that there will be more decent, self-respecting Korean men than those low, filthy thieves.

I have once heard about the infamous remark that one Japanese tourist is said to have made after a trip to Korea--"minna dorobo desuyo (they're all thieves)!" But this is too much. The very fact that many people seem to share that experience puts me into great shame and agony. How very saddening! What a disgrace!

I haven't had any relationship with other Korean boys before, but I should hope I do not ever have to encounter the aforementioned kind of deceitful male thief-prostitutes--if one is interested in others' money first, then he is a thief-prostitute!

May this wide-spread illness be gone some day. To think it's OK to steal from or take advantage of other people who are better-to-do is NOT Korean culture. Such a thinking is an enormously gross symptom of many irresponsible and indecent folk in Korea.

After reading your post, I felt awful casting doubts on the integrity of a small number of Korean men with generalizations based on my limited experience.

Mind you, Koreans are not the only victims of stereotypes that are as hard to remove as chewing gum on the sole of your shoes.

I am used to my own compatriots, the French, being called dirty (*we splash ourselves with eau de toilette because we can't be bothered to bathe*), alcoholics (*wine is cheaper than water, so even babies are made to drink it to make them sleep quietly*), French men don't wear underwear (*that is why their shirts are so long at the front and the back*).

Naturally, we are so proud of our language that we stubbornly refuse to speak English, even if we are fluent in it. Our shopkeepers are so arrogant, that they wont serve you unless you beg them to. We, the French, are convinced that France is the center of the universe and French culture is superior to all others.

As everybody knows, we all wear berets, have red noses, drink wine at tables covered with red-checkered table-cloths, and always have a cigarette dangling from our lips with ashes falling all over the place.

Driving in Paris is suicidal, of course, and beware of Paris sidewalks! They are littered with dog p...

I even had an American friend seriously tell me that "without the French, France would be the nicest country in the world"...

Thank you for your post. It was not your previous post but rather my fellowmen's behaviour that I found offensive. I did not think your comment was a "gratuitous remarks," as it is better to be aware of bad things than to ignore them. None the less, I appreciate your kindness and consideration.

It seems always important not to forget that one's behaviour will inevitably be contributing to the stereotype of his country and his fellowmen. Only if more people are aware of that! (Then more honourable standard would be established...)
