Would members kindly check their speeds on this page...
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
...and then click 'Reply' below this message and report your actual download and upload speeds?

Choose "Seattle" for the server. That's where Groupee is located.

Note that your ISP may *say* you're getting some super fast speed, but the link above checks your actual connection speed.

This is a bit like, but not as much fun, as you show me yours and I'll show you mine.

Some of you have amazing uploading power! Something to do with your optical fibers?

Just curious about that and the reason why JguyUSguy wants to compare our connection speeds.

KF, I asked only out of curiosity. This weekend I've had to use internet cafes and I've noticed that connection speeds can differ widely. The page loads so clumsily at slower speeds. So, just wanted to get a sense for what other users experience.

I was only asking in the hope that this thread might enlighten me on the reason why my 8 mb ADSL Yahoo BB Internet connection in central Tokyo feels so much slower than the identical Internet connection on the computer I use in a mountain resort 100 km away from the metropolis.

Is it all about 'location, location, location'? Or is the computer to blame (the one in Tokyo is seven years old, the other one is less than two)? If not, should I think of upgrading to optical fiber connection in Tokyo? Would it make a 'visible' difference?

Any comments, opinions, advice would be greatly appreciated!

JguyUSguy, what do you conclude from your survey?

KF

Can anyone support this recommendation to KF?

First step, change to optical fiber connection. This would boost your maximum speed from 8 Mb to whatever is the current norm (200 Gb?). As I said I got 40 Gb two years ago.

With central Tokyo locations, you should experience far greater connection speeds, don't you think? sic!

You are taking far too long to "upload", KF. Is it the old equipment and would a younger model help? Big Grin

Let's go shopping at BIC camera. I need a new apple myself.

Finally, what is JguyUSguy's speed? Does yours outstrip ours? Let us know how ours compare with yours. Nothing like life in the fast train, er...lane.

nightbird, we have a cable modem connection here. I dont know the speed because this weekend im stuck with this ancient OS9-loaded machine with an absurdly out-of-date version of Explorer that cant load the test page. As you can see, i cant even type apostrophes on this pc. for admin work, im going to internet cafes. will tell you later in the week if it really matters to you, but i assume our connection speed is pretty much average.
